Chiang never missed any important street protests or demonstrations since the 1980s. At Chen Nan-jung’s funeral procession, he was shocked by the sudden self-immolation of Chan I-hua. “To pursue equity, justice and dignity under the dictatorship, one may regard self-immolation as the most desperate means of the utmost protest.”
