The Reasons for Arrest

After the end of the repression for the February 28 Incident in plain areas, the government started to investigate on the Indigenous areas and created a monitoring network.

The Indigenous elites with political and military influences, such as Uong'e Yatauyungana, Yapasuyong'e Yulunana and Losin Watan, had made themselves the targets of both the communists and the government; as the former attempted to win them over, the latter viewed them as a thorn in its side.

Concerned about their prestige in the Indigenous communities, the authorities decided to execute them in the name of corruption and communist espionage, while dividing the Indigenous communities via decrees and propaganda.

On December 31, 1950, the working report done by the First Unit of the Mountain Area Insepction under the Ministry of National Defence analyzed the local reputation, attitudes towards the authorities and the ways of thinking of the Indigenous elites. Most of them were deemed as “simple,” “pure,” and “just” in term of their thinking. However, Losin Watan (Lin Jui-chang) and Yagu Hola (Li Yueh-chiao) of Jiaoban Township, along with Chen Fu-chuan, the Mayor of Heping Township, were marked as “complicated.”

On the contrary, the working report done by the Second Unit held a positive affirmation on Fang I-chung, the viilage chief of Tapangu.

To reduce the vigilance of the Indigenous elites, on October 9, 1950, Uong'e Yatauyungana and Yapasuyong'e Yulunana were invited to join a meeting in Taipei in the name of the chairperson of Taiwan Provincial Government. However, they were Interrogated right after their arrival in Taipei. Uong'e Yatauyungana was even summoned by Chiang Ching-kuo, who was the director of the General Political Department under the Ministry of National Defence during that time.
